Ben opened the door a few minutes before six, revealing Kara glaring darkly at him. âYou.â
âWhoa, déâjà vu. I thought we moved past you being angry with me?â
She waved to the crate in her other hand. âThis beast you created pooped in my tennis shoe!â
Ben coughed on a laugh, pressing his lips together. âHow did he manage that?â
âGreat aim?â
âNo, I mean, werenât you wearing your shoes?â
âYes, I was wearing my comfy shoes that have never touched the pavement until today so they donât scuff up the floors at the café. I leave the comfy shoes by the back door and swap them out when I come in. Then I drop the tennis shoes in my office so they are out of the way until I leave. I left him to play in my office with a litter box. I didnât see the pile inside until I picked them up, and my fingers squished all the way up to my knuckleââ
Ben held a hand up. âI get the visual.â Ben squatted down to peer into the crate. âWere you a bad cat?â
The kitten meowed loudly, rubbing against the cage door. Ben took the crate from Kara and stood up. As soon as she stepped all the way inside and shut the door, Ben set the crate down and let the kitten out. The small orange cat sprang from the cage and immediately climbed up Benâs pant leg until he pulled him off and set him on his shoulders. He rubbed his cheek against Benâs, and Kara pursed her lips.
âHeâs pretending to be adorable, but heâs plotting.â
âI donât know about that. Heâs never pooped in my shoes.â
âGood for you,â she mocked, making a face.
âI think youâre just hangry. Letâs get a couple tacos in you, and youâll see that Chaos didnât mean it.â
âChaos?â
Ben grinned. âItâs what Iâve been calling him in my head, and it seems to fit, considering the circumstances.â
âYou know, naming an animal is the first step in keeping it.â
âNow, donât spoil my dinner. Itâs better than calling him pain in theâow!â Chaos had bit his ear, and he reached up to get him off his shoulder. âNo more perch for you.â
âPlease, you say that, but I bet heâs back up there in no time. Admit it, youâre kind of a softy.â
Ben opened his mouth to argue, but he liked the way she smiled at him, as if his feelings for Chaos endeared him to her.
âThink what you want, but there will be no more biting my ear tonight,â he said, setting the kitten on the back of his couch.
Kara went to his sink and washed her hands. âHow exactly do you want me to help you in the bathroom?â
âI need to seal my shower and the back of my sink. I could do it by myself, but since you wanted to spitball ideas, I thought you could keep me company while I work.â Ben came up alongside her to wash his hands, too. âYou want something to drink?â
âSure.
